Finders Keepers

Dogs have taken on much more complex roles in our lives than they were bred to. No longer just protectors and hunters, they are companions and family members, in some cases, soul mates. They have developed personalities and distinct characters. Many of these animals have suffered a great deal before becoming adopted  into a  loving, safe environment. This project is a collection of profiles of these unique individuals, and a celebration of the love we have for them. Through these portraits I aim to give a voice to the voiceless, and celebrate the dogs' immense forgiveness and ability to move on.

Echo Glen

The Canine Connection program at Echo Glen Children's Center seeks to bring together both "throw away" children and dogs. The program aims to educate the inmates in dog training, grooming and service dog certification, while providing a rigorous training for "un-adoptable" rescue dogs, which after 10 weeks are adopted out of the center and placed with individuals and families. Through the process of transforming these dogs,  the children, who often have emotional problems, develop a sense of accomplishment, a loving bond and respect for their dog, and skills to work through issues and challenges. The dogs receive outstanding training which allows them to serve not only as great pets but as contributors to society. While documenting this incredible program, I have chosen to focus on the mutually beneficial bond between the children and dogs.
